On July 4,1942, Haitians and Americans founded a bi-national center to reinforce friendship and cultural ties between their two countries. Located in the heart of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian-American Institute has enjoyed decades of continuous community service and remains faithful to the ideal of its founders.

The Institute has two goals: Teaching English, and Promoting Culture.

Teaching English. With the dedication of our teachers, approximately 2,500 students per day attend classes. To date, over 100,000 students have studied English and successfully pursued a wide variety of professions, both locally and abroad. The faculty plays a leading role in hosting English teaching seminars. Also, the Institute is the official Testing Center for the TOEFL and SAT tests, and also offers GRE and PRAXIS exams.

Promoting Culture. On January 7, 2010, the newest addition to the campus was inaugurated. A beautiful 4-storey multi-use building, its top floor is dedicated to cultural events. In conjunction with the Grand Hall (completed in 2002) which can serve as a ground-floor reception and exhibit area, the Institute is an important center for cultural affairs and activities held in mid-town Port-au-Prince. Check our Special Events page for a dynamic assortment of art exhibits, food and craft fairs, concerts, special films and conferences as the Institute develops programs to serve the local and international community.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Key word for 2013:  OPTIMISM

As I begin this new year full of OPTIMISM, I find it necessary to ask myself:  "What makes me so optimistic?"

Perhaps the fact is:  the HAITIAN-AMERICAN INSTITUTE is beginning its 71st year and is still going strong after successfully overcoming, at times, monumental obstacles.

Perhaps another fact is:  my admiration for each and every employee who is collectively responsible for our doors being open to the thousands of students studying English in our classrooms.  They hope (and deserve to hope) that a door of opportunity will open to them for advanced studies or a job and ultimately a career.  They know being armed with the powerful tool of speaking English many things are now possible.

Perhaps another fact is:  HAI has a growing list of cultural activities planned for 2013. Our Cultural Hall, Grand Hall and new outdoor Pergola Roof Garden add to a diverse menu of possibilities.  Give HAI an opportunity to make your event a reality.

Perhaps another fact is:  the completion of our newest building that will house HAI's library. Kudos to Architect Ing. Fritz Benjamin! The bookshelves are presently being assembled to receive the precious books that were salvaged from the 2010 earthquake, along with the priceless private collection of books on Haitian history written by Haitian authors as well as fascinating books on Art, generously donated by Dr. Jean-Robert Mathurin, Library Consultant and member of the Board of Directors.  We also received a donation of books from Oxford University Press.  If you, or someone you know, have a book or a collection of books to donate to the library we would be very appreciative.  There's ample space for additional books since we have far less than the 8,000- book capacity needed to fill the shelves.  We will be announcing the official opening of the library in the very near future.

I wish everyone a wonderful New Year filled with OPTIMISM!
